Q: If I was going to paint this, what kind of paint should I get?

I didn't painted. But I asked and they suggested me to prime and then acrylic paint

Q: Can I use homemade wood putty to smooth the body out and make this a more streamlined model?

Wood putty may be good for unseen areas it sands easy but not always a good look. I use a plastic putty by Vallejo. It's water base and easy to manipulate.

Q: How difficult would this be for an adult beginner?

Adult beginner, OK. (Would not recommend for a child). Keep in mind: patience, take your time removing pieces, joining parts, check assemblies - especially mechanicals. Sand where needed ("burrs" where pieces were attached to sheet). Wax liberally, not only moving parts, but to help ease parts together. Good luck and enjoy!

Q: any help on how to put on metal spring?

It's a bit tricky, I had to use a pair of tweezers for help. I use them to increase the opening of A1 in order to slide in the middle hook of the spring. Once that's done and you're tightening the spring be careful. Hold it to keep it from unraveling. I used the tweezers to guide the spring hook to it's final resting place. Hope I was helpful.
